Dayton Police Investigate Westwood Avenue Shooting That Injured Five as Community Advocates Push for Anti-Violence Program Expansion

Authorities in Dayton are conducting an active investigation into a daytime shooting along Westwood Avenue that left multiple individuals injured, including children. The outbreak of violence has heightened ongoing concerns about neighborhood safety and prompted local community leaders to renew calls for expanded resources to support violence interruption initiatives across the city.

According to preliminary details provided by the Dayton Police Department, gunfire erupted on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in four individuals sustaining direct gunshot wounds. Officers and emergency personnel responding to the scene confirmed that the gunshot victims included three adults and one juvenile.

In addition to those struck directly by bullets, a second juvenile suffered injuries from flying shards of shattered glass created during the gunfire. Medical personnel evaluated all five individuals, and investigators later confirmed that every victim involved in the incident is expected to survive their injuries.

The immediate aftermath of the shooting left a significant stretch of Westwood Avenue blanketed in physical evidence. Broken glass and numerous yellow ballistic markers covered the roadway for several hours on Tuesday as forensic specialists and detectives conducted a thorough on-scene inquiry to document the sequence of the event.

Investigators determined that the incident began when a dispute escalated into an exchange of gunfire between occupants of two different vehicles. Witnesses in the area reported seeing individuals inside the two cars begin firing weapons at one another following a physical or verbal altercation in the street.

The brazen nature of the broad-daylight confrontation prompted strong condemnation from local law enforcement. Dayton Police Sgt. Creigee S. Coleman spoke out firmly against the incident, emphasizing that the department and the community cannot tolerate situations where firearms are discharged in public areas and residents are put in harm's way.

Sgt. Coleman noted that violent behavior of this magnitude is entirely unacceptable for the city, stating that even a single person getting shot is one too many. He stressed that preserving public safety remains an urgent priority for both neighborhood residents and the police force.

A substantial contingent of Dayton police detectives remained at the Westwood Avenue scene for several hours to process physical evidence, map bullet trajectories, and interview potential witnesses. Sgt. Coleman explained that investigators dedicated extended time on site to ensure they gathered all available information necessary to resolve the shooting and identify those responsible.

As detectives continued their work on the street, members of local community outreach initiatives also arrived on the scene. Among those responding was Greg West, an outreach advocate representing the grassroots group Felons with a Future, who voiced profound concern regarding the ongoing violence impacting local families.

West addressed the urgent need to bring an end to street conflict, underscoring the severe and traumatic toll that such incidents take on Dayton’s youth. He emphasized that the community cannot stand by while young people are continually exposed to gunfire and collateral harm in their own neighborhoods.

Describing the operational approach of Felons with a Future, West explained that outreach workers rely on their own personal backgrounds and lived experiences to build rapport with individuals involved in street disputes. He noted that although the team members do not view themselves as saints, their past challenges give them meaningful empathy that allows them to connect with and redirect high-risk youth.

However, West pointed out that grassroots organizations are facing significant financial barriers that hinder their ability to operate at a broader scale. He stated that funding limitations are currently the primary obstacle preventing the Violence Interruption Program from expanding its proactive outreach into additional Dayton neighborhoods.

West highlighted that the city has experienced a continuous string of violent episodes, describing the situation as one incident occurring after another. Because of this recurring cycle, he argued that community stakeholders and local leaders must find the necessary financial means to expand violence interruption efforts across all sectors of the city.

At this stage of the investigation, the Dayton Police Department has not released any descriptive details or identifying information regarding the suspects involved in the two vehicles. Detectives are continuing to review forensic evidence and pursue leads to establish who fired the shots.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the Tuesday altercation, who possesses security camera footage of the area, or who has any information relevant to the case to reach out directly to the Dayton Police Department to aid the ongoing investigation.
