Milford Health Inspectors Cite 16 Food Establishments for Serious Safety Violations

Public health officials in Milford identified significant health code non-compliance across local food service operations during routine regulatory evaluations conducted throughout July. Municipal inspectors visited a total of 44 dining establishments across the city and issued citations for serious violations to 16 separate businesses, including a hotel and a grocery store.

The July findings reflect an ongoing enforcement pattern by the Milford Health Department, which also cited 16 commercial food establishments for major infractions during the previous month of June. Local health agencies conduct these surveillance checks to ensure proper hygiene, safe food storage, and strict sanitization practices are maintained across commercial kitchens.

Under local public health standards, inspectors categorize deficiencies into three distinct tiers based on the potential risk posed to consumer safety. Priority violations represent the most severe infractions, directly linked to foodborne illness hazards, and require immediate corrective action within 72 hours. Priority foundation violations, which involve operational components that support safety rules, carry a 10-day remediation timeline, while general core violations must be resolved within 90 days.

Among the audited locations, Walnut Beach Coffee House, situated at 59-61 Naugatuck Ave., accumulated the largest number of enforcement actions during its July inspection. Sanitarians documented nine priority violations at the venue, focusing heavily on worker sanitation breakdowns such as staff failing to wash hands after eating, neglecting to change gloves between contamination events, and touching their hair and face during active food preparation duties.

Inspectors at the coffee shop also observed a food employee handling ready-to-eat bread with bare hands, as well as multiple blocked kitchen hand sinks that were obstructed with stored items. Additional critical citations at the facility involved chlorine sanitizer mixed at improper concentrations, cleaning chemicals suspended directly over food inventory, an inadequate hot water supply in the restroom, and temperature control failures involving cooked eggs and turkey bacon.

Walnut Beach Coffee House was further cited for nine priority foundation infractions, which noted an absence of active managerial control, missing soap and paper towels at the kitchen washing station, a soiled food slicer, and an unclean ice machine interior. Staff also failed to date mark temperature-controlled foods held beyond 24 hours, maintained unlabeled sanitizer buckets, left cooked eggs covered inside the walk-in cooler, lacked sanitizer testing strips, and operated a reach-in cooler without an internal thermometer. A city inspector mandated complete hand-washing retraining for all personnel, and a subsequent reinspection confirmed all listed violations were resolved. A shop manager noted that safety protocols are taken seriously and that immediate remediation had taken place.

At Bella Napoli Pizza, located at 864 Boston Post Road, health officials issued two priority violations during their July visit. The citations addressed sanitizer prepared at an incorrect chemical strength and improper holding temperatures discovered in the upper compartment of the sandwich preparation unit. Both issues were rectified on-site during the inspection, while a manager declined to provide public comment.

Inspectors visiting The Blind Rhino at 21 Daniel St. logged two priority violations alongside a single priority foundation citation. Environmental health officers discovered uncovered food products inside the walk-in cooler and recorded unsafe holding temperatures for multiple meats, including hamburger, steak, chicken, and ham. The inspector also cited the venue for a soiled can opener blade, with all items being corrected on-site. Management did not return inquiries for comment.

At Bridge House, located at 48 Bridgeport Ave., inspectors documented two priority violations after finding moldy pepper jack cheese and severely dented cans of roasted red peppers in stock. The dining establishment was additionally cited for a priority foundation infraction regarding an unclean interior within the ice machine. The documented hazards were resolved on-site during the inspector's visit, and management did not issue a response.

A single priority violation was recorded at the Burger King franchise located at 1292 Boston Post Road, where health officials observed food items held at improper storage temperatures. A manager at the fast-food location declined to provide comment regarding the inspection report.

At Hawar's Deli, operating at 300 Bridgeport Ave., inspectors recorded one priority violation for sanitizer mixed at an improper concentration and one priority foundation violation for unlabelled, undated deli meats, specifically ham and turkey. Both infractions were corrected on-site while the inspector was present, and management did not respond to requests for comment.

Honeyspot Pizza 2, located at 100 Landsdale Ave., received a priority citation for inadequate chemical sanitizer concentration, along with two priority foundation violations. The secondary citations cited sliced ham marked with incorrect expiration dates and an unlabelled chemical spray bottle. The establishment corrected all noted issues on-site, and management did not respond to inquiries.

The Hyatt Place Hotel at 190 Old Gate Lane was also among the cited commercial facilities, receiving one priority violation after inspectors found out-of-temperature foods in a grab-and-go display case. The hotel was cited for two priority foundation infractions concerning the improper cooling of leftover eggs and the positioning of a bug zapper light inside a storage room near food shelves. Hotel management declined to comment on the findings, which were corrected immediately.

At Isabel's Bakery, located at 18 Lenox Ave., sanitarians logged a priority violation for improper wash, rinse, and sanitization methods at the facility's three-bay sink. The bakery also received two priority foundation citations concerning labeled ready-to-eat food items that lacked proper preparation dates, as well as an unlabeled chemical spray bottle. The issues were resolved on-site, and management did not comment.

Finally, an inspection at The Lazy Lobster at 6 Broadway resulted in three priority violations and multiple priority foundation citations. Sanitarians cited the business for reheating soups in a steam table rather than on a cooking stove, storing buttermilk at an improper temperature, and keeping a hand-pumped chemical sanitizer bottle on a shelf directly above food supplies. The restaurant also received priority foundation citations for lacking proper employee training documentation and failing to provide paper towels at a hand sink, with all operational violations resolved on-site.
