New York State Police have officially released the identity of the 45-year-old man who was fatally shot by a state trooper earlier this week during an armed confrontation at a campground in Greene County. Authorities confirmed that the deceased individual was Amir Hamza, who brandished what was later determined to be a pistol-style BB gun during the encounter with responding law enforcement personnel.

The fatal shooting took place on the evening of Monday, Sept. 14, 2026, within the grounds of the Whip-O-Will Campground, situated at 644 Route 31 in the town of Cairo. State officials provided updated findings regarding the sequence of events that led to the lethal use of force, shedding light on the rapid escalation that unfolded as officers arrived to handle a reported violent disturbance.

Emergency dispatchers initially sent troopers to the rural campground shortly after 8:20 p.m. following emergency reports regarding an alleged physical assault involving two men. During the initial emergency 911 phone call, dispatch operators were able to hear what appeared to be an active, ongoing domestic dispute unfolding in the background, signaling an urgent and volatile situation to the responding units.

Upon arriving at the designated campsite location, law enforcement officers discovered a male victim who had suffered an apparent head injury during the reported altercation. First responders immediately evaluated the injured individual on site to stabilize his condition before arranging for urgent emergency medical transport.

The injured man was subsequently transported to Albany Medical Center to receive specialized medical treatment for his trauma. Authorities later confirmed that the patient had been admitted to the regional medical facility in stable condition, allowing investigators to focus their operational efforts on locating the other party involved in the initial disturbance.

Witnesses and initial scene observations directed responding troopers toward a nearby camper situated within the Whip-O-Will grounds, where Hamza was believed to be located. Seeking to make contact with the occupant, troopers cautiously approached the exterior of the camper structure to conduct their initial inquiry and secure the scene.

According to official police accounts, troopers knocked directly on the entrance door of the camper while verbally identifying themselves by announcing "State Police." The standard law enforcement announcement was intended to make their presence and authority clear to anyone inside the dwelling.

Moments after the announcement was made, Hamza exited the camper and advanced toward the uniformed troopers outside. As he stepped forward, Hamza extended his right arm outward and pointed a black, pistol-style firearm directly in the direction of a state trooper, creating an immediate and perceived lethal threat to the officers on the scene.

Faced with an imminent firearm threat at close proximity, the targeted trooper reacted defensively by maneuvering to the side out of the direct line of sight. The trooper simultaneously drew a department-issued service weapon and discharged it toward Hamza, successfully striking him and neutralizing the perceived danger.

Immediately following the gunfire, troopers shifted from tactical defense to providing critical emergency medical interventions. Officers initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation and deployed an automated external defibrillator at the scene in an urgent effort to revive the stricken individual before outside emergency services arrived.

Lifesaving efforts continued until professional emergency medical technicians reached the campsite and assumed care of Hamza. Despite the sustained resuscitation attempts administered by both state troopers and emergency medical personnel, Hamza succumbed to his injuries and was officially pronounced dead at the scene.

Subsequent forensic inspection of the scene and the weapon displayed by Hamza revealed that the firearm was not a conventional lethal handgun, but rather an authentic-looking black pistol-style BB gun. The visual similarity between such replica weapons and standard semi-automatic firearms often presents severe split-second assessment challenges for law enforcement officers in low-light and high-stress environments.

State Police officials have not publicly disclosed Hamza’s primary hometown or background details beyond confirming his age and name. Furthermore, the agency has withheld the specific identities of the troopers involved in the incident, adhering to ongoing administrative and investigative confidentiality protocols standard in deadly force inquiries.

The fatal encounter has triggered formal independent reviews, as is customary with all officer-involved fatal shootings in the state. The New York Attorney General's Office has launched an active investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death, conducting its inquiry alongside lead investigators from the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation based in Catskill.

State authorities continue to process evidence recovered from the Whip-O-Will Campground and are working to establish the full timeline of events that preceded the 911 call. Law enforcement officials have issued an appeal to the public, asking anyone who may possess additional information, witnessed the altercation, or observed the confrontation to contact investigators with the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
