A woman who made an unfounded child abuse report that brought authorities to the home of former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and his husband, Chasten Buttigieg, will not face criminal prosecution. The baseless accusation triggered an invasive government response that forced the couple’s 4-year-old twins to undergo forensic questioning and caused the children to be separated from Pete Buttigieg overnight.
Marshall County Prosecutor E. Nelson Chipman Jr. in Indiana confirmed the decision not to pursue legal action against the individual who initiated the welfare check. While acknowledging that the complaint launched an intrusive investigation into an innocent family, Chipman determined that the state could not establish the necessary criminal intent required to secure a conviction.
In an official email sent on July 29 to the Indiana State Police, Chipman explained that the woman’s extensive history of alcohol abuse, ongoing hallucinations, and delusional thinking posed an insurmountable legal barrier. According to the prosecutor, these documented psychological impairments made it impossible for the state to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that she knowingly submitted a fabricated report.
Public records identify the individual responsible for the call only by the initials "TJ." Authorities reported that the woman placed the emergency complaint while visiting relatives in Indiana before subsequently traveling back to her home state of Alabama.
According to investigative findings, the woman was actively responding to auditory hallucinations that others could not hear and was expressing grandiose thoughts around the time the report was filed. During her temporary stay in Indiana, she had at least three separate interactions with local law enforcement, including an arrest related to a domestic battery allegation during which testing showed her blood-alcohol concentration was at 0.32.
The false accusation set off an immediate cross-state intervention, dispatching a Michigan State Police officer and a caseworker from Child Protective Services directly to the Buttigieg residence. Officials informed Pete Buttigieg that he was legally prohibited from being left alone with his young children until child welfare workers could conduct separate, forensic interviews with both twins.
As a result of the mandated restrictions, the 4-year-old children were removed from their household for the night and sent to stay with Chasten Buttigieg’s parents. The former cabinet secretary later described the distressing period as one of the most painful episodes he had ever experienced, noting that the twenty-four hours spent waiting for his children to return marked some of the darkest hours of his life.
Pete Buttigieg publicly condemned the incident in June, characterizing the false complaint as a cruel and politically motivated hoax. He also disclosed that at least one of the law enforcement officers who responded to the residence similarly believed that the welfare report was driven by political animus.
Following their inquiry, the Michigan State Police formally confirmed that investigators concluded the entire report was completely without merit. Law enforcement officials emphasized that fabricated child abuse claims create severe collateral damage by diverting vital police officers and protective workers away from vulnerable children facing authentic, life-threatening emergencies.
Subsequent reviews of official records revealed significant systemic failures and lapses in inter-agency communication between the two states. Indiana child welfare officials had forwarded the unvetted complaint across state lines to Michigan authorities without attaching the caller’s name or providing any basic contact information.
Furthermore, records indicated that Michigan police waited six full days after their initial confrontation at the Buttigieg residence before taking any formal investigative steps to identify the person who had originated the abuse claim. By the time authorities looked into the source, the family had already endured an extensive disruption and strangers had subjected the young children to formal questioning without their parents in the room.
Child welfare professionals who examined the case files pointed out that a combination of poor official judgment and fractured inter-agency coordination severely magnified the situation. The flawed response allowed an anonymous, unverified tip to circumvent standard vetting procedures and directly upend a household.
In response to the missteps, the Michigan Attorney General’s office launched an official investigation into both the initial false allegation and the broader administrative handling of the complaint by the involved agencies. A spokesperson for the attorney general confirmed that the state-level inquiry into the matter remains ongoing and active.
The episode comes after years of public scrutiny directed at Pete and Chasten Buttigieg, whose marriage and parental life have frequently been targeted by political opponents and conservative commentators. In 2021, the former transportation secretary faced widespread ridicule from political adversaries simply for taking routine parental leave to assist in caring for the couple's newborn premature twins.
Following the Indiana prosecutor's announcement that no criminal charges would be filed against the caller, a spokesperson for the Buttigieg family declined to issue a new statement regarding the specific charging decision. However, the spokesperson reiterated that the family had previously called for full transparency, clear answers, and systemic accountability from the agencies involved.
