Powerball Jackpot Climbs to $232 Million After No Winning Tickets Sold in Sept. 9 Drawing

The Powerball grand prize continues to grow after Wednesday night's nationwide drawing concluded without a single ticket matching all six winning numbers. The rollover pushes the multi-state lottery prize pool higher heading into the upcoming weekend drawing, giving hopeful participants another chance at an immense financial windfall.

During the official drawing on Wednesday, Sept. 9, the winning white ball numbers selected were 9, 40, 42, 55, and 65. The red Powerball drawn was 23, and the Power Play multiplier for the night was established at 2X. The Power Play add-on allows players with non-jackpot winning tickets to double their base prize payouts.

The advertised jackpot for the Wednesday drawing stood at an estimated $207 million, which offered a lump-sum cash option valued at $89.4 million. Because no ticket matched all five white balls in addition to the red Powerball, the entire top prize will roll over to expand the prize pool for the next scheduled game.

Secondary tiers in the Sept. 9 drawing also failed to produce any multi-million-dollar winners. Lottery officials reported that no tickets succeeded in matching all five white balls to secure the standard $1 million Match 5 prize. Additionally, there were no tickets that won the elevated $2 million Match 5 prize that comes with the optional Power Play feature.

With no grand prize winner emerging, the estimated jackpot for the next drawing on Saturday, Sept. 12, has risen to $232 million. Should a player match all winning numbers on Saturday and choose the lump-sum cash value instead of an annuity, the one-time payout is estimated at $100.0 million before taxes.

Powerball holds its regular drawings three evenings each week, with winning numbers selected at 11 p.m. Eastern Time on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Players wishing to enter the next contest must acquire their tickets prior to local retail sales cut-offs, which typically close one to two hours before the drawing depending on the jurisdiction.

In addition to the standard game, the Powerball Double Play drawing was held for the Sept. 9 event. The winning numbers drawn for the Double Play round were 32, 33, 58, 62, and 69, with a red Powerball of 18. Double Play is a specialized add-on feature that gives ticket holders an extra opportunity to compete for a top cash prize of $10 million using their same selected numbers.

Standard tickets for the Powerball lottery cost $2 per play. For an extra $1 per line, players can add the Power Play multiplier to increase non-jackpot winnings. In jurisdictions such as Indiana and Kentucky, customers can also choose to add the Double Play feature for an additional $1 fee per play.

To play the standard lottery game, participants select five numbers from a pool of 1 through 69 for the white balls, along with one number from 1 through 26 for the red Powerball. Players have the option to pick their own combinations on a paper play slip or request a randomly generated quick pick from an authorized lottery terminal.

Securing the top jackpot remains a rare event due to steep mathematical probabilities. The overall odds of matching all five white balls plus the red Powerball are approximately 1 in 292.2 million. However, the game features nine distinct prize levels with varying odds to reward partial matches across the field.

The second-tier prize of $1 million is awarded for matching all five white balls without the Powerball, an outcome carrying odds of 1 in 11.7 million. Matching four white balls plus the red Powerball yields a $50,000 payout with odds of roughly 1 in 913,000. Matching four white balls alone or matching three white balls with the Powerball both return $100 prizes, with odds of 1 in 36,000 and 1 in 14,500, respectively.

Lower-tier payouts provide smaller cash returns across several other combinations. Correctly matching three white balls without the Powerball pays $7 at odds of about 1 in 580, which matches the $7 prize for hitting two white balls plus the Powerball at 1 in 700 odds. The lowest tier awards a $4 prize to players who match one white ball plus the Powerball at 1 in 92 odds, or those who match only the red Powerball at 1 in 38 odds.

Powerball is currently played across 45 states, including Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, as well as in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Participation is open to anyone of legal playing age, and players do not need to be U.S. citizens or permanent residents to purchase tickets and claim valid prizes. Physical tickets are sold at licensed gas stations, convenience stores, and supermarkets throughout participating regions.

Online lottery options are also accessible to players in select jurisdictions. Official state lottery websites permit digital ticket purchases for residents in Kentucky, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C. In states such as Ohio and Indiana, consumers can legally order digital tickets through Jackpocket, the official digital lottery courier partner of the USA TODAY Network.
