North Central Michigan College Secures $6 Million for Skilled Trades and Dental Education Programs

North Central Michigan College (NCMC) in Petoskey has successfully secured a substantial $6 million grant from the state of Michigan. This funding will be instrumental in the college's expansion plans, focusing on two critical areas: skilled trades education and dental hygiene.

The funding, which was part of Michigan's fiscal year 2027 budget, was signed into law by Governor Gretchen Whitmer on July 21, 2026. NCMC President David Roland Finley expressed his delight at the news, emphasizing the importance of the funding for the college's growth and development.

"This capital outlay request is a significant boost for our institution," Finley stated. "The support from the state ensures that we can provide our students with the best possible training for high-demand jobs in the region."

The $6 million grant includes approximately $3.47 million for the proposed Skilled Trades Education Pathways Center and an additional $2.5 million for the purchase and renovation of a new dental hygiene clinic. This investment is part of a larger $22 million Career and Technical Education Enhancement project, aimed at bolstering workforce training in healthcare, technology, and skilled trades.

The Skilled Trades Education Pathways Center, set to be added to NCMC's Martin Jahn Technology Center, will cover about 10,000 square feet. This expansion will enhance hands-on training opportunities in trades such as carpentry, plumbing, welding, and HVAC. Moreover, it will support activities related to manufacturing and engineering technology.

"This new center will not only provide students with hands-on experience but also ensure that they are well-prepared for the workforce," Finley explained. "We are committed to addressing the region's labor needs and fostering economic growth."

The college's investment in workforce training is part of a broader strategy to support area residents seeking career development. "We want to do more than serve our host communities," Finley continued. "We have many eager learners who want to earn a good living with a year-round position in northern Michigan."

NCMC plans to launch its dental hygiene program in Fall 2028, with an initial intake of around 15 students. The program is designed to take three to three and a half years to complete, with the goal of expanding the intake over time. The need for dental hygienists in Michigan, particularly in northern regions, is significant, with the state projecting a demand for an additional 200 hygienists.

"This program is crucial for the state, as it addresses the current shortage of dental hygienists," Finley noted. "Graduates can start earning $80,000 a year immediately, providing them with a great work/life balance."

The proposed STEP Center is expected to include up to six different laboratories, with construction completion anticipated by 2030. However, NCMC still needs to raise additional funds to supplement the state award. Despite this, the impact on the college's construction trades coursework will be substantial.

"We want to expand our offerings in the skilled trades area by providing fast-track programs for career-focused students," Finley said. This includes both college credit and non-credit workforce training offerings.

NCMC currently serves nearly 1,800 traditional students and another 400-500 in non-credit, workforce training programs. The college also hosts lifelong learning workshops, supporting thousands of residents over the years.

"This is about supporting the needs of area residents," Finley concluded. "We are committed to providing education and training that empower individuals to succeed and contribute to their communities."

The college's commitment to workforce training and education aligns with its vision of fostering economic growth and development in northern Michigan. With the $6 million grant, NCMC is well on its way to achieving this goal.
