Milwaukee Cathedral Installs Historic First Transgender Dean in Episcopal Church

The Episcopal Church has marked a historic milestone in its institutional leadership with the appointment of its first openly transgender cathedral dean. The Very Rev. Micah Cronin has formally taken up the role of leading All Saints' Cathedral in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, establishing a prominent new chapter for LGBTQ+ representation within the national denomination.

Cronin, who is 30 years old, assumed his leadership responsibilities at the Wisconsin cathedral in August. In his new position, he guides an affirming community that gathers an average weekly congregation of approximately 70 worshippers for Sunday services.

Reflecting on his historic appointment, Cronin emphasized that his elevation demonstrates that individuals from sexual and gender minority backgrounds hold a legitimate, valued place within religious institutions. He noted that visible representation in sacred offices offers an essential reassurance to believers who have often felt alienated by faith traditions.

In an interview published by the Episcopal News Service, Cronin articulated his view of the broader mission of his denomination. He explained that he views this era in the Episcopal Church as a time defined by a conscious choice to practice radical hospitality and inclusion, grounding that commitment directly in the tenets of Christian discipleship.

The newly appointed dean also highlighted the distinct pastoral opportunities created by his visibility. He observed that occupying the dual identity of an ordained priest and a transgender individual allows him to engage in rare and meaningful conversations, offering a unique avenue to share the Gospel in environments where Christian messages might otherwise remain unheard.

Cronin's journey toward the priesthood began amidst significant personal and spiritual challenges. Growing up in a rural area of New York State, he belonged to a conservative church community that refused to affirm or accept his transgender identity, creating a period of spiritual estrangement during his formative years.

A pivotal turning point arrived when Cronin was 19 years old. After discovering an inclusive and welcoming Episcopal parish in Olean, New York, he embraced the denomination and converted to the Episcopal faith, setting in motion a vocation that would ultimately lead him to ordained leadership.

Before arriving in Milwaukee to assume the deanship, Cronin completed prior pastoral work in the eastern United States. He served as a transitional deacon within the Diocese of New Jersey, where he became known for writing about the necessity of fostering deeper tolerance within the broader Christian tradition.

Cronin's theological reflections have extended beyond preaching tolerance exclusively among like-minded individuals. In a 2022 essay authored for the publication Earth & Altar, he advocated for active dialogue and spiritual engagement with those whose perspectives directly oppose inclusive practices.

In that writing, Cronin challenged believers to recognize the presence of Christ even within individuals whose political beliefs appear objectionable or threatening. He noted that Christian duty calls faithful people to seek divine dignity in those holding prejudiced, homophobic, or anti-transgender attitudes, including individuals who would refuse to recognize Christ in return.

Cronin clarified that extending love toward hostile or uncharitable individuals is not intended to validate harmful conduct. Instead, he framed this posture as an act of spiritual discipline, asserting that evil is conquered only when believers work in harmony with the transformative and purifying love of God.

The installation of the church's first transgender dean builds upon a half-century of official policy within the Episcopal Church. Fifty years earlier, the denomination achieved a major turning point during its 1976 General Convention, when delegates adopted a landmark resolution formally affirming the equal place of LGBTQ+ people within the life of the church.

Advocacy leaders within the denomination have celebrated Cronin's installation as a vital achievement for church inclusivity. The Rev. Cameron Partridge, associated with the advocacy organization TransEpiscopal, voiced deep admiration for Cronin's path, noting how meaningful it is that the denomination has provided a space where Cronin could authentically pursue both his humanity and his priestly calling.

Partridge also underscored the historical continuity of LGBTQ+ advocacy within the local diocese. He pointed to the enduring legacy of the late Rev. Gari Green, a founding figure of TransEpiscopal who ministered within the Diocese of Milwaukee until her passing in 2024, demonstrating the region's established history of welcoming gender minorities into church life.

Reflecting on that local history, Partridge expressed confidence that Green would have viewed Cronin's elevation to the deanship as a profound emblem of hope and an indication of the transformative future unfolding within the church and the wider community.

As Cronin settles into his responsibilities at All Saints' Cathedral, his ministry stands as a living testament to the evolution of Episcopal leadership, blending pastoral care with a visible commitment to bridging ideological divides through faith-based outreach.
