Historic Aircraft, Exotic Reptiles, and Blues Festival Headline Busy Augusta-Area Weekend

Residents and visitors throughout the greater Augusta area have access to an expansive lineup of community programming this weekend, featuring activities ranging from classic aviation exhibits to live roots music and hands-on educational displays. Between Friday, Sept. 11, and Sunday, Sept. 13, local venues across Richmond and McDuffie counties are hosting diverse gatherings tailored for families, music enthusiasts, aviation buffs, and animal lovers alike.

As with all major weekend community rosters, planners emphasize that specific schedules remain dynamic across individual hosts. Organizers recommend that prospective guests confirm event details and ticket availability prior to traveling, as high attendance, weather conditions, or operational requirements can occasionally lead to sold-out admissions, itinerary revisions, or last-minute rescheduling across the region.

Aviation history takes center stage on Saturday, Sept. 12, when the Georgia Barnstorming Tours arrives at Augusta Regional Airport. Coordinated through the Commemorative Air Force Airbase Georgia, the exhibition brings a distinguished fleet of vintage aircraft to the regional runway, granting the public an uncommon window into mid-twentieth-century flight engineering and military aviation heritage.

The barnstorming event is scheduled to run continuously from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. While general admission to view the historic airplanes up close on the tarmac is entirely free of charge, organizers have established pre-booking options for those interested in purchasing flight experiences aboard the restored aircraft. Complete reservation procedures and detailed fleet backgrounds are available directly through the Airbase Georgia official website.

Augusta Regional Airport at 1501 Aviation Way will simultaneously serve as the backdrop for another machinery-centric gathering on Saturday morning. Running from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the interactive "Meet a Machine" showcase invites families and children to inspect, climb aboard, and learn about a comprehensive range of utility, agricultural, and emergency vehicles.

The exhibition brings together equipment from several public service organizations and regional commercial enterprises, including police patrol cars, heavy agricultural tractors, and specialized service machinery. Admission for the morning event is set at $5 for adults, while children aged 12 and under are granted free entry. Proceeds generated from the gate admissions are dedicated directly to benefiting the Children's Hospital of Georgia through the Children's Miracle Network.

For wildlife enthusiasts, the Warren Road Community Center at 300 Warren Road in Augusta will host the Show Me Reptile Show over the course of the two-day weekend. The traveling educational expo provides attendees with direct access to a wide variety of cold-blooded species, amphibians, and small exotic mammals from regional breeders and educators.

Beyond standard viewing and hands-on learning opportunities, attendees at the reptile exposition are permitted to take photographs throughout the exhibition hall. Qualified vendors will also offer select animals for purchase to interested keepers, alongside necessary habitat infrastructure, feed, lighting, and specialty husbandry supplies required to properly maintain exotic pets at home.

The reptile event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and reopens Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Advance general admission tickets can be secured online for $12 for adults and $5 for children aged 7 through 12, whereas children aged 6 and younger may enter for free. Adult tickets purchased directly at the door on the day of the event are priced at $15.

In addition to standard entry, the reptile expo offers specialized VIP passes designed to afford enthusiasts early access to the showroom floor on Saturday. These priority tickets cost $17 when bought in advance and $20 when purchased on-site. Further updates, vendor announcements, and event schedules continue to be published through the organizer's dedicated social media channels.

Meanwhile, regional music traditions will be celebrated in nearby McDuffie County during the 32nd Annual Blind Willie McTell Music Festival. Named in tribute to the pioneering Piedmont blues legend, the long-running gathering serves as one of the area's premier roots-music celebrations, attracting dedicated listeners from across the Southeast.

The main festival celebration takes place on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 965 Stagecoach Road NE in Thomson. This year's headline performance features the acclaimed group Los Lobos, who are scheduled to deliver their signature hybrid sound combining rock and roll, traditional blues, Tex-Mex influences, and rich Americana storytelling.

Festivities formally begin on Friday evening, Sept. 11, with a complimentary outdoor community concert staged at 111 Railroad Street in Thomson. Scheduled from 7 to 9:30 p.m., the kickoff performance features Blair Crimmins and The Hookers, providing an energetic musical preview to set the stage for Saturday's full-day program.

Because the Friday kickoff show is held in an open-air setting, organizers advise attendees to bring their own portable folding chairs or picnic blankets for lawn seating. Outside food and non-alcoholic beverages are permitted on the festival grounds, though outside alcoholic beverages remain strictly prohibited. Complete ticketing information, performance rosters, and logistics are accessible via the festival's main website.

Together, the diverse roster of weekend events highlights the vibrant cultural, educational, and philanthropic activities taking place across the greater Augusta area. Whether touring vintage warbirds, discovering unusual wildlife, inspecting public works machinery, or enjoying renowned roots music, area residents have multiple engaging outings to choose from across the three-day span.
