As seasonal foliage begins its annual transformation across the SouthCoast, communities throughout the Greater New Bedford region are rolling out a full schedule of autumn festivities. Local organizers have assembled a wide-ranging calendar of seasonal happenings, ranging from long-standing agricultural fairs and culinary competitions to craft markets and family-friendly community gatherings.

Residents and visitors looking to celebrate the season without embarking on extended travel will find a diverse selection of nearby weekend activities. The upcoming lineup highlights local agriculture, regional culinary traditions, and charitable causes, offering numerous opportunities for both adult entertainment and family-centered recreation across Dartmouth, Acushnet, Middleboro, Westport, and New Bedford.

The seasonal festivities begin in Dartmouth with the two-day Dartmouth Grange Fair, scheduled for Friday, Sept. 11, and Saturday, Sept. 12. Hosted at The Dartmouth Grange, located at 1133 Fisher Road, the fair provides free admission to all attendees. Festivities commence at 4 p.m. on Friday, highlighted by an evening lineup featuring a traditional pie-eating contest at 6:30 p.m. followed immediately by a family magic performance at 7 p.m.

The Grange Fair resumes on Saturday with an array of educational and traditional fair programming. Visitors can observe live beekeeping demonstrations, participate in seasonal apple tasting sessions, view intricate art quilting displays, and take part in a Giant Penny Sale. Live musical entertainment will be provided on Saturday by the Unlikely Strummers Ukulele Band, adding to the fair’s celebration of local culture and agricultural heritage.

Simultaneously, the town of Acushnet will mark a major local milestone with the 45th annual Apple-Peach Festival, held on Saturday, Sept. 12, and Sunday, Sept. 13. Centered at the Long Plain Museum at 1203 Main St., the festival celebrates regional harvests with fresh peach cobbler, locally prepared baked goods, craft showcases, and live entertainment. A central tradition of the event is Sunday’s community parade, which begins at 10 a.m. at Pope Park and proceeds directly to the main festival grounds.

Saturday, Sept. 12, also marks the launch of a new community tradition with the first annual Whaling City Collective Community Festival. Operating from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Holy Ghost Grounds & Hall at 104 Allens Neck Road in Dartmouth, the free event features both indoor and outdoor activities. Attendees will have access to artisan merchandise, handmade goods, food vendors, musical acts, raffle drawings, and participatory family field day competitions tailored to all age groups.

In Middleboro, shopping and seasonal flavors come together on the evening of Saturday, Sept. 12, during the Sip & Stroll: Harvest event. Scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. on the Middleboro Town Hall Lawn at 10 Nickerson Ave., the gathering offers a curated cocktail and retail experience. The event includes dozens of regional artisan vendors, visiting food trucks, and full bar service, complemented by free parking and no admission fee.

Family-oriented programming continues the following weekend on Saturday, Sept. 19, when the Southcoast YMCA hosts the Dartmouth Fall Festival at 276 Gulf Road. Geared toward children between the ages of 2 and 10, the event runs from 3 to 4:30 p.m. with an entry fee of $10 per child. Planned activities include pumpkin decorating, craft stations, face painting, a story walk, popcorn snacks, and an inflatable bounce house, with advance registration required through the YMCA.

Also on Sept. 19, New Bedford will host Fall Festa at Madeira Field, located at 50 Madeira Ave. Offering free admission for attendees of all ages, this event pairs a traditional pig roast with live country music performances. Visitors can browse a variety of craft tables, purchase goods from local vendors, and participate in children’s entertainment throughout the venue grounds.

Middleboro will provide another major shopping and dining destination on Sept. 19 with the Titicut Green Fall Festival, located at 38 Plymouth St. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the festival grounds will host more than 60 independent crafters, artisans, and vendors. Guests can purchase homemade preserves, enter prize raffles, and visit on-site café vendors serving seasonal refreshments.

Toward the end of the month, the Westport Fairgrounds at 200 Pine Hill Road will host the South Coast Harvest Festival from Friday, Sept. 25, through Sunday, Sept. 27. The multi-day celebration combines fall-themed food, musical performances, and an artisan marketplace with illuminated autumn garden displays and vintage antique trucks. Admission is set at $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 5 to 12, and free for children under 5, with tickets sold on-site.

As the calendar shifts to October, the regional tradition of Oktoberfest returns to New Bedford on Saturday, Oct. 3, and Sunday, Oct. 4. Hosted at City Pier 3 at 51 MacArthur Drive, the waterfront gathering serves as a key fundraiser dedicated to supporting local at-risk youth programs. Attendees can sample craft beers, hard seltzers, and sangria while engaging in cornhole matches and enjoying musical entertainment alongside dishes from regional food trucks.

Access to the New Bedford Oktoberfest is structured around two ticketing tiers, with advance presale tickets priced at $15 and day-of admission available at the gate for $20. Both ticket options cover general entry and musical entertainment, while food and drink options remain available for individual purchase from participating vendors throughout the weekend.

The festival season concludes with a prominent culinary contest on Tuesday, Oct. 6, during the 21st annual New Bedford Seaport Chowder Festival. Hosted from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at Rachel’s Lakeside, located at 950 State Road in Dartmouth, the event invites attendees to sample and evaluate specialty chowders and soups prepared by competitive area restaurants. Accompanied by live musical performances from the band Be Kind, Rewind, the event offers $35 tickets for attendees seeking to help select the region's best chowder.
