With less than 50 days remaining before local voters head to the voting booths for the upcoming midterm elections, the political contest for Fresno’s City Council District 7 seat has been thrust into controversy. The heightened tension follows the circulation of an online questionnaire that directly scrutinized the personal identity, religious background, and cultural appearance of one of the leading contenders.
The problematic questionnaire was distributed to District 7 residents roughly two weeks ago via SurveyMonkey, prompting swift reactions across the local political landscape. At the epicenter of the emerging dispute is Nav Gurm, a 26-year-old attorney and Fresno native who is running to represent the district while openly practicing the Sikh faith.
Rather than focusing exclusively on standard municipal policy platforms, the digital poll presented respondents with an 18-question survey that delved deeply into Gurm’s demographic background. Among the subjects raised for evaluation were the candidate’s relatively young age, his ethnicity, and his religious affiliation, asking voters to weigh in on how these personal traits might shape their electoral choices.
Most notably, the survey featured an inquiry that explicitly targeted Gurm’s traditional headwear. The question directly asked respondents whether a political candidate’s religious background or traditional cultural attire, specifically referencing a turban, would negatively or positively influence their willingness to cast a ballot in that candidate’s favor.
In the wake of the survey's distribution, Gurm addressed the matter publicly, demonstrating resolve in the face of what many viewed as an inappropriate line of political questioning. The candidate noted that having thick skin is an essential part of entering public service, remarking that very little of what critics say has the power to bother him personally.
At the same time, Gurm observed that the questionnaire represents a broader and concerning shift in contemporary electoral norms. He pointed out that personal elements of faith, heritage, and background were historically considered off-limits in campaign discourse, yet that standard appears to be rapidly deteriorating in modern politics.
Gurm firmly stood by his background, making it clear that his heritage remains a core element of who he is as a public servant. He emphasized that his traditional attire had never previously been raised as an issue of concern among constituents, adding that he remains exceptionally proud of his Sikh faith and his identity as a Sikh American.
The controversy also prompted a swift condemnation from Gurm’s opponent in the District 7 race, Ariana Martinez Lott. Rather than capitalizing on the divisive messaging, Martinez Lott spoke out forcefully against the nature of the questions circulating among local constituents.
Martinez Lott emphasized that discriminatory rhetoric has no place in the local democratic process, irrespective of who is on the receiving end. She stated unequivocally that she stands firmly against all forms of racist acts directed at anyone within the community, including her own political rival.
According to information highlighted by Gurm, the questionnaire was reportedly carried out by an entity calling itself Political Opinion Research. On its website, the organization describes its business operations as a Michigan-based firm specializing in telephone-based data gathering, research collection, and political analysis.
However, an examination of the research group’s web presence revealed several suspicious inconsistencies that raise questions about its legitimacy. An inspection of the firm's home page uncovered glaring irregularities, including haphazard font alterations and visible spelling mistakes that deviate from professional polling standards.
Following widespread community attention and mounting backlash over the nature of the questions, the survey link has since been rendered inactive. Visitors attempting to access the online SurveyMonkey questionnaire are now met with a notification indicating that the poll has officially been closed to further responses.
The contentious poll also led to public speculation and questions regarding whether Gurm’s own campaign could have orchestrated the questionnaire as a covert tactic to generate sympathy and capture media attention. Gurm was directly asked to address these rumors and firmly dismissed the notion of any campaign involvement.
In addressing the speculation, Gurm noted that his campaign operates with full transparency and that every single dollar spent is publicly and legally disclosed. He explained that his team has not allocated any campaign funds toward research or polling operations, choosing instead to channel financial resources directly into grassroots voter contact efforts.
Reiterating his denial, Gurm characterized the question as fair to ask in modern politics, but maintained that he would never resort to such maneuvers. He stated definitively that his campaign is well above engaging in underhanded tactics to boost visibility, keeping the focus squarely on the voters of District 7 as the midterm election draws near.
