Former Lake George Inventor Receives 10-Year Prison Term for Multi-Million Dollar Investment Fraud

A former Lake George resident and household goods inventor has been sentenced to a decade behind bars after federal prosecutors revealed he swindled investors out of substantial sums of money to bankroll a lavish personal lifestyle. Michael Conner, 58, was handed the 10-year prison sentence following a protracted legal battle that culminated in his conviction on dozens of federal fraud charges.

The sentencing took place in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York, where U.S. District Judge Mae A. D'Agostino delivered the punishment on August 31. In addition to the decade-long term of incarceration, Judge D'Agostino ordered Conner to serve three years of supervised release following his discharge from prison and mandated that he pay $1.2 million in restitution to those he deceived.

The court's decision followed an eight-day jury trial in April 2025, during which Conner was found guilty on 22 counts of wire fraud along with two counts of tax fraud. The legal proceedings against him were originally initiated when a federal grand jury returned an indictment against the 58-year-old in January 2024.

According to evidence presented by government investigators, Conner operated an elaborate fraudulent scheme spanning roughly fifteen years, from 2008 through 2023. Throughout this prolonged timeframe, he solicited substantial sums from various financial backers by falsely asserting that the capital was necessary to finalize commercial deals or successfully market and sell his patents.

Conner had secured patents for several household and consumer items, which formed the centerpiece of his investment solicitations. Among the products he promoted were a specialized paint bucket known as a paint caddy, a knife designed with a heated blade, and a rotating refrigerator shelf.

Rather than dedicating the gathered capital toward manufacturing, patent commercialization, or legitimate business operations, prosecutors proved that Conner systematically redirected the funds to satisfy his personal indulgences. The government established that the stolen monies were channeled toward luxury dining, high-end wine, and the procurement of prostitutes.

Financial records, money transfers, text messages, and email correspondence constituted the core evidentiary trail that prosecutors used to expose the misappropriation during the trial. Among the personal expenses brought before the jury were receipts from upscale culinary establishments, including the prominent steakhouse Salt & Char located in Saratoga Springs.

The impact of Conner’s fraudulent maneuvers took a severe toll on the people who entrusted him with their savings. Following the sentencing hearing, First Assistant United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III highlighted the predatory nature of the defendant's actions, noting that Conner deliberately targeted vulnerable individuals, including at least one victim who was terminally ill.

The federal trial was marked by dramatic disruptions engineered by the defendant himself, stretching the proceedings a day longer than originally scheduled. On the morning of April 9, 2025, just before the prosecution and defense were slated to deliver their closing arguments, Conner orchestrated a staged suicide attempt by telling family members that he had ingested pills.

Conner was subsequently transported to a medical facility for evaluation, where court records show he made candid disclosures regarding his motivations. While speaking with the attending medical personnel, Conner admitted that the entire incident was driven by the fact that he simply did not want to face incarceration in a federal penitentiary.

The court reconvened the following day to conclude the trial once medical clearance was established. Conner’s attempts to manipulate his circumstances continued even after the jury returned a guilty verdict; prosecutors documented that he dispatched an email to his victims pleading with them to advocate for his release from custody under the pretext that he needed to attend an urgent business meeting to market his patented inventions.

During the final sentencing hearing, Conner continued to display defiance rather than contrition. In his formal allocution before the bench, the defendant attempted to deflect accountability by openly blaming one of his victims for signing an unfavorable contract with him. His conduct grew so audacious that he sought permission to deliver a second allocution, a request that Judge D'Agostino promptly rejected.

In an official statement released on the Monday following the sentencing, Sarcone denounced Conner as a "vicious fraudster" who had stolen millions of dollars from innocent individuals and explicitly accused him of committing perjury while testifying on the stand during the April 2025 trial.

Sarcone remarked that while it remains highly improbable that the victims will ever recover their lost financial resources from the defendant, the substantial prison sentence guarantees that he will no longer be capable of inflicting financial devastation upon others. The prosecutor also commended the investigative diligence of IRS Investigations and Homeland Security, whose joint inquiry built the foundational case against the inventor.

Following the imposition of the 10-year prison sentence, Conner’s defense attorney, Benjamin Hill, filed an appeal contesting the outcome, while declining to offer public comment on the matter. Federal prosecutors have dismissed the appeal as a meritless endeavor, asserting that it will prove just as futile as Conner's previous efforts to evade legal accountability.
