Disabled Air Force Veteran Leads Five-Day Florida Keys Cycling Tour to Mobilize Voters and Back Congressional Bid

A multi-day cycling demonstration is currently underway across South Florida as a group of military veterans embarks on a district-wide journey to promote civic engagement and political representation. Led by disabled veteran Craig McDonnell, the five-day bicycle expedition is traveling through the expanse of Florida's 28th Congressional District, seeking to energize local communities and emphasize the importance of democratic participation as the election season advances.

The civic initiative, officially titled "The Ballots Are Coming!", involves a demanding journey that begins on the mainland in Homestead and concludes at the iconic Southernmost Point in Key West. Designed as a high-visibility mobilization effort, the cross-district tour aims to rally support for retired U.S. Navy Commander Phil Ehr, who is currently campaigning for the congressional seat representing South Dade and the Florida Keys.

Leading this challenging physical expedition is McDonnell, a 76-year-old disabled U.S. Air Force veteran whose leadership forms the backbone of the campaign event. Despite the demanding nature of a multi-stage cycling tour across South Florida's coastal terrain, McDonnell is actively guiding a cohort of fellow former service members across the entire route to champion their chosen candidate and advocate for broader voter turnout throughout the region.

McDonnell brings a distinguished record in the armed forces to this effort, having served in the U.S. Air Force from 1969 through 1975. During his six-year military tenure, McDonnell attained the rank of staff sergeant. His service included duty with the 9th Special Operations Squadron, a background that underscores his long-standing familiarity with discipline, operational dedication, and mission-oriented teamwork.

In addition to his prior military career, McDonnell has established a lasting reputation as a photographer, dedicating years of his life to documenting and preserving military history. This blend of visual documentation and armed service experience informs his current civic leadership, turning a congressional campaign tour into a visible statement on the continuing contributions of military veterans in public life.

The political centerpiece of the cycling mission is the congressional campaign of Phil Ehr, a retired Navy Commander seeking election in Florida's 28th Congressional District. By organizing and conducting this ride, McDonnell and his team of veterans are highlighting shared military backgrounds and placing Ehr's public service credentials at the center of their outreach to regional constituents.

The timing of the cycling tour carries deliberate symbolic weight, as the opening leg was scheduled to commence over the weekend marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Organizers framed the journey around this milestone to underscore core themes of national service, personal sacrifice, and the enduring responsibilities of democratic citizenship during pivotal historical moments.

Beyond honoring military service and commemorating historical anniversaries, "The Ballots Are Coming!" focuses directly on immediate civic mobilization and electoral preparedness. The ride is specifically timed to coincide with the period in which local residents are preparing to receive their vote-by-mail ballots, serving as an active reminder across South Dade and the Keys about the essential role of democratic voting.

The operational schedule for the cycling mission divides the expansive journey into five distinct geographic stages. The tour officially got underway on Sunday, September 13, launching from Homestead and heading south across the entryway to the archipelago to complete its initial leg in Key Largo.

Following the completion of the opening stage, the itinerary outlines a steady progression down the island chain. On Monday, September 14, the cycling team undertakes the second leg from Key Largo to Islamorada. The third phase of the tour, scheduled for Tuesday, September 15, carries the participants deeper into the Middle Keys as they pedal from Islamorada to Marathon.

The subsequent phases of the cycling tour will cover the Lower Keys over the following days. On Wednesday, September 16, the fourth leg sees riders traveling from Marathon to Summerland Key. The tour reaches its conclusion on Thursday, September 17, with a final stage departing Summerland Key and culminating at the Southernmost Point in Key West, marking the official completion of the five-day journey.

To broaden community involvement, organizers structured the event to welcome wider public participation alongside the core contingent of veterans. Members of the community and local supporters have been invited to join the ride for a single stage, bike across multiple days, or ride alongside the veterans for the entirety of the tour through an open registration process.

By combining physical endurance, electoral mobilization, and veteran solidarity, the five-day expedition across Florida's 28th Congressional District highlights how former service members continue to shape public dialogue. Through their journey from Homestead to Key West, McDonnell and his fellow riders aim to link military sacrifice with active democratic involvement as vote-by-mail ballots make their way to voters throughout the Florida Keys.
