Law enforcement officers and fire safety investigators in Detroit are seeking the public’s urgent assistance in tracking down a man accused of intentionally setting a blaze inside an occupied multi-family residential building earlier this summer. Investigators are appealing directly to the local community for help in identifying and apprehending the suspect responsible for the dangerous early-morning incident.

According to official statements from municipal authorities, the criminal act occurred during the early morning hours of June 9, 2026, within an apartment complex located along the 9300 block of East Jefferson Avenue, situated near the intersection of McClellan Avenue. Following months of ongoing investigation into the fire, officials released security video footage and still photographs of the suspect on Wednesday to assist in the identification process.

Findings compiled by the Detroit Police Department and local fire investigators indicate that the incident unfolded on the second floor of the residential property. Surveillance cameras positioned within the building's interior hallway recorded the unidentified man navigating the common area while carrying a container filled with an unidentified liquid substance.

The security camera footage reveals that the suspect deliberately approached an occupied apartment unit on the second floor and poured the liquid directly onto the flooring outside the tenant's doorway. The intentional targeting of an inhabited home posed a grave risk to the residents inside the apartment and neighboring units alike.

After covering the floor with the accelerant, the individual retreated to a neighboring stairwell to take cover. From that partially concealed position inside the stairway, he lit the flammable fluid on fire, igniting flames that rapidly spread across the hallway floor before he fled the scene.

Despite the extreme danger posed by the spreading fire and the dense smoke generated in the enclosed hallway, emergency officials confirmed that no injuries were reported among building residents or responding personnel. Investigators noted that the lack of casualties was fortunate, as fires set directly in front of entryways can quickly block essential escape routes for occupants trapped inside.

Detectives investigating the case have released a physical description to help the public identify the man seen in the security recordings. The suspect is described as an adult male standing between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 11 inches in height.

At the time the crime was committed, the suspect was wearing distinct clothing that investigators hope will be recognized by members of the community. He was observed dressed in a hooded jacket in a shade of dark blue or purple, which he wore pulled up over his head during the encounter.

In addition to the dark hooded jacket, the man was wearing bright red pants that featured a distinctive white pattern across the fabric. The suspect’s unusual ensemble was completed with sandal-type footwear on his feet as he traversed the residential hallway.

Investigators reviewing the surveillance footage also noted that the individual appeared to be holding an electronic tablet device in his hands as he carried out the arson. This unique detail has been highlighted by authorities as a potential identifying characteristic for anyone who might have seen him nearby.

Law enforcement officials pointed out that the perpetrator made a concerted and deliberate effort to conceal his facial features from the apartment complex's security cameras. His conscious evasion tactics and awareness of overhead surveillance suggest he took steps to avoid being captured clearly on video while moving throughout the property.

Arson incidents inside multi-unit residential structures represent a severe public safety hazard due to the high density of occupants and the risk of fast-moving structural fires. When common corridors and exits are intentionally set on fire, residents face the immediate danger of smoke inhalation and structural entrapment, making the resolution of this investigation a matter of critical importance.

Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the identity of the suspect, his whereabouts, or the circumstances surrounding the June 9 incident to contact law enforcement immediately. Tips can be directed to the Detroit Police Department's Fire Investigation Division by calling (313) 596-2940.

Members of the public can also provide information regarding the case by contacting the police department’s specialized arson tip line directly at (313) 628-2900. These communication lines allow residents to share relevant observations or leads directly with the detectives handling the case.

Individuals who wish to provide information while remaining entirely anonymous can submit tips to Crime Stoppers of Michigan by calling 1 (800) SPEAK-UP. In addition, information and electronic evidence can be submitted to investigators via email at arsontips@detroitmi.gov.
