Consecutive West Lafayette Thefts Target Vape Cartridges in Sledgehammer Robbery and Tobacco Store Break-In

Law enforcement authorities in Tippecanoe County are actively investigating a pair of early-morning commercial crimes in West Lafayette, where thieves targeted retail supplies of vape products in back-to-back incidents over the weekend.

The successive offenses began with an armed robbery utilizing a heavy tool on Sunday morning and continued roughly twenty-four hours later with a retail store break-in early Monday. In both occurrences, the primary objective of the perpetrators appeared to center specifically on stealing nicotine cartridges and related vaping merchandise from local storefronts.

The first incident unfolded at approximately 2:20 a.m. on Sunday at the Marathon Friendly Market, located at 1908 Sagamore Parkway West. According to information released by county law enforcement officials, the confrontation began as a 22-year-old store clerk was stepping outside the convenience store building toward the surrounding fuel pump island.

While walking outside, the employee was suddenly confronted by an aggressive man wielding a sledgehammer who charged directly in his direction. In a desperate attempt to escape potential physical harm, the young clerk turned and tried to run away from the advancing assailant, but he lost his footing and fell to the pavement.

Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Terry Ruley reported that the armed suspect walked directly up to where the store clerk was lying on the ground. The assailant raised the sledgehammer overhead in a threatening motion as if preparing to strike the fallen worker, though investigators determined the gesture was intended as an intimidating bluff rather than a completed physical strike.

Leaving the clerk on the ground outside, the robber subsequently made his way inside the convenience store to execute the theft. Once inside, the suspect utilized the sledgehammer to smash open an interior retail display case holding valuable merchandise, grabbing multiple vape cartridges and several boxes of nicotine vapes before exiting the building.

According to Chief Deputy Ruley, the suspect departed the Marathon convenience store on foot and walked away from the immediate area. Investigators noted that no vehicle has been tied to the suspect or the robbery scene, indicating that the individual fled the immediate area on foot.

Official police reports have released a physical description of the robbery suspect to assist the public in identification. The perpetrator is described as a white male with dark blond hair, standing approximately 6 feet tall, with a slender physical build and an estimated weight between 170 and 180 pounds.

Approximately twenty-four hours after the gas station holdup, authorities were alerted to another commercial property crime occurring at roughly 2:10 a.m. on Monday. The second incident targeted the Smoke Time tobacco store, an establishment situated along 2827 U.S. 52 West in West Lafayette.

Geographic analysis of the crime scenes highlights their close proximity within the municipality. The Smoke Time tobacco shop sits only about nine blocks away from the Sagamore Parkway Marathon location that had been struck the preceding night, establishing a tight geographical radius for the weekend's criminal activity.

Security surveillance footage recovered from outside the tobacco establishment documented two men lingering near the business prior to the Monday break-in. Video recordings showed one of the men walking away from the storefront, while the second individual forcefully gained entry into the building to steal nicotine vape cartridges from the shop's inventory.

Chief Deputy Ruley explained that the Sheriff's Office is maintaining a measured approach regarding whether a single individual or group is responsible for both consecutive property crimes. While investigators are cautious and have not formally declared that the burglar and the sledgehammer-wielding robber are the same person, they recognize evident operational similarities and the shared geographic area connecting both cases.

Both events reflect an emerging pattern where retail specialty items like nicotine vapes and concentrated electronic cigarette supplies become high-value targets during late-night hours when commercial staffing levels and customer traffic are minimal. The brazen use of a sledgehammer during the Marathon incident highlights the significant safety risks faced by overnight retail clerks working late shifts.

Detectives from the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department are continuing their review of physical evidence, timing details, and electronic surveillance footage collected from both Sagamore Parkway and U.S. 52 West to establish potential links between the suspects and recover the stolen nicotine goods.

Law enforcement is urging community members, nearby residents, and motorists who may have observed suspicious activity around either commercial site during the early morning hours of Sunday or Monday to come forward. Anyone possessing relevant information is encouraged to contact the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department directly at 765-423-9321.

For individuals who wish to submit tips without revealing their personal identity, authorities noted that anonymous reports can be submitted through the We-Tip Hotline by dialing 800-782-7463, where information can be relayed securely to assist local investigators in solving both cases.
