Chicago Police Investigate After 12-Year-Old Discharges Unattended Gun on Bridgeport School Bus

An active police investigation is currently underway in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood after a 12-year-old student found an unattended firearm on a school bus and discharged it, sending a bullet through one of the vehicle’s windows during afternoon dismissal.

The unsettling event unfolded on a bus contracted to transport students from Minnie Miñoso Academy. According to details released by the Chicago Police Department, an unidentified man brought a bag containing a gun onto the vehicle and subsequently left it unattended in an area within reach of the young passengers on board.

While the bus was stationed outside the school facility, a 12-year-old boy came across the abandoned bag. Investigators reported that the child reached inside, retrieved the loaded weapon, and fired a single round inside the passenger cabin.

The gunshot immediately struck a window of the school bus, shattering the glass and leaving a visible bullet hole in the vehicle. Despite the severe danger presented by an unexpected discharge in a confined space carrying schoolchildren, authorities confirmed that no students or staff members suffered physical injuries in the commotion.

The aftermath of the gunfire triggered further panic on the scene. Rather than assisting or remaining on site, the man who had initially left the weapon unattended quickly intervened, grabbing both the firearm and the bag before fleeing the area on foot.

Law enforcement personnel have not yet established the identity of the man who fled with the weapon. Detectives are continuing to investigate the individual’s background and have not yet clarified whether he possessed any formal ties to Minnie Miñoso Academy, the student population, or the independent transportation company operating the route.

Following the dismissal-time disturbance, the principal of Minnie Miñoso Academy addressed the emergency directly by sending a letter home to parents and guardians on Monday to explain what had occurred and to alleviate mounting safety concerns.

In the written communication, the principal confirmed the afternoon gunfire, stating that a shot was fired from within a bus designated for transporting the school’s students at dismissal. The administration affirmed that although the projectile struck and damaged a bus window, all children aboard the vehicle remained entirely safe throughout the incident.

The principal also emphasized that the dangerous item had been confined solely to the transport vehicle stationed outside. School officials made a point to reassure families that at no point did the firearm enter the actual school building or campus grounds, while noting that privacy restrictions prevented the release of further individual details.

The response from campus leadership included an immediate alert to administrative and public safety partners. Both the Chicago Police Department and the Chicago Public Schools Office of Safety and Security were notified right away, launching a joint effort to examine the circumstances surrounding the security breach.

The gunfire has caused significant distress throughout the surrounding Bridgeport community, prompting residents and local employees to question how a lethal weapon could be left accessible on a vehicle tasked with safely transporting minors.

Miguel Lozano, an individual who works in the immediate vicinity of Minnie Miñoso Academy, shared the widespread confusion felt across the area. He stated that the incident raises serious questions regarding how such a lapse could occur and why an unattended firearm was allowed anywhere near students.

Jesse Marquez, a local resident who lives directly across the street from the school, voiced deep concern over the profound negligence involved in leaving a weapon unsecured. Marquez insisted that no firearm of any kind should ever be left unattended, pointing out that weapons are inherently fatal and that mistakes involving them carry permanent, unalterable consequences.

Reflecting on how narrowly a major catastrophe was averted, Marquez pointed out the immense relief that no lives were lost. He observed that while the community was fortunate the damage was limited to broken glass on the bus, the situation could have easily resulted in severe trauma, grievous injury, or death.

In the wake of the close call, the school’s leadership reiterated that the safety of students remains an utmost priority. Administrators urged school families to maintain high vigilance and reminded community members to promptly report any potential safety hazards or suspicious activities to school officials so that immediate corrective action can be taken.

Both the Chicago Police Department and the Chicago Public Schools Office of Safety and Security are continuing their joint investigation into the incident as detectives seek leads to locate the unidentified suspect who fled the scene with the firearm.
