Autonomous Vehicle Collisions Climb in Austin as Tech Fleets Expand Across Texas Roads

Austin has logged eight fresh autonomous vehicle accidents over a recent four-week stretch, highlighting the operational complexities facing driverless fleets as commercial operators rapidly increase their presence on Texas roadways. The municipal tally represents more than a third of the incidents recorded across the entire state during the same period.

According to federal regulatory filings submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for the month-long span ending August 17, Texas recorded a total of 22 robotaxi-related collisions. While the capital city served as a primary hotspot with eight incidents, major urban hubs across North and Southeast Texas also registered significant activity, underscoring the growing integration of autonomous systems in dense traffic corridors.

The uptick in collision reports aligns directly with an aggressive rollout of driverless vehicles throughout Texas. Tesla Inc. has enlarged its registered regional footprint to 439 vehicles in preparation for the commercial debut of its Cybercab. Simultaneously, Waymo, the autonomous driving subsidiary owned by Alphabet Inc., has scaled its statewide operating fleet to nearly 1,000 robotaxis.

Among the eight incidents reported in Austin, one collision prompted an on-scene investigation by the Austin Police Department after an electric bicycle rider was injured. The accident involved a driverless vehicle operated by Avride, which currently deploys a fleet of 344 Hyundai Ioniq 5 crossovers throughout the metropolitan area.

Federal filings regarding the incident indicate that the cyclist was operating an e-bike in the wrong direction on a two-way street before losing control of the bicycle. The cyclist subsequently slid into the side of the autonomous Avride vehicle, sustaining minor injuries. The event added to Avride's local record, bringing its total crash tally to 27 incidents since tracking began.

Tesla also contributed to Austin’s recent incident log when one of its autonomous vehicles collided with static infrastructure. The vehicle struck a metal bollard connected to a chain fence within the city. This collision increased Tesla’s cumulative accident count in Austin to 23 reports since June 2025.

Waymo accounted for five of the newly registered collisions in Austin, bringing its overall historical count in the city to 135 incidents since mid-2025. The company’s reports described varied circumstances, including encounters where conventional, human-driven vehicles improperly merged into the Waymo vehicle's active travel lane.

Other Waymo incidents in the city involved localized navigation and environmental hazards. In one case, a driverless car sustained structural damage to its underside after traversing a steeply sloped exit ramp in a commercial parking lot. In another event, a commercial garbage truck reversed into a stationary Waymo vehicle while maneuvering on a city roadway.

Amazon Inc.'s self-driving subsidiary, Zoox, maintained a clean operational record in Austin during the four-week reporting period. Operating a modest fleet of 44 autonomous vehicles within the local market, the company reported no new collisions, leaving its cumulative accident total unchanged at three.

Across the broader Texas region, autonomous vehicle incidents were distributed among several key metropolitan centers. Regulators recorded four collisions in Houston, while the combined Dallas and Arlington area reported 10 incidents. Additional industry players, including autonomous delivery specialist Nuro and autonomous transit developer May Mobility—which collaborates with ride-hailing company Lyft—also contributed to the statewide crash reports alongside Waymo and Avride.

In contrast to other major urban centers in the state, San Antonio registered zero driverless car incidents during the evaluated timeframe. Waymo’s commercial ride-hailing operations in the Alamo City have remained completely suspended after severe weather in April led to one of its autonomous vehicles being swept away by local floodwaters.

The most severe incident in Texas during the reporting period unfolded in Dallas, where local law enforcement and federal regulators opened an investigation into a fatal multi-vehicle collision involving a pedestrian. According to documentation provided by Waymo to federal authorities, the autonomous vehicle was decelerating to yield to a pedestrian in the roadway when a human-operated SUV struck the individual.

The force of the initial impact propelled the pedestrian, identified by authorities as 71-year-old Juan Guzman, into the rear left side of the adjacent Waymo car. Emergency responders transported Guzman to an area medical facility, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The Dallas Morning News reported that the driver of the conventional SUV remained on the scene to cooperate with investigators following the crash. Dallas police officials confirmed that no immediate arrests were made and no criminal charges were filed, with the official investigation into the fatal sequence of events remaining active.

The Dallas fatality represents the only recorded death involving an autonomous taxi in Texas within federal safety databases dating back to June 2025. Across the entire country, only one other fatal robotaxi incident appears in the federal database for that same timeframe: a September collision in Tempe, Arizona, where a motorcycle struck a decelerating Waymo vehicle before the ejected rider was fatally hit by a trailing passenger car.
