Augusta-Area Communities Mark 25th Anniversary of September 11 Attacks with Slate of Memorial Events

Communities across the greater Augusta metropolitan area and neighboring South Carolina counties are uniting this Friday to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States. A wide array of memorial ceremonies, physical tributes, stage performances, and community dinners are scheduled throughout the region to honor the thousands of lives lost and pay tribute to the emergency personnel and military service members who responded in the wake of the national tragedy.

The milestone quarter-century observance marks a poignant moment for reflection across the Central Savannah River Area. While major civic observances spearheaded jointly by the city of Augusta and Augusta University were formally observed during the preceding weekend on Saturday, a robust series of grassroots and institutional events are taking place on Friday to ensure residents have multiple avenues to participate in personal and collective remembrance.

In Columbia County, local emergency responders are anchoring the morning’s observances with a physically demanding tribute. Columbia County Fire Rescue is hosting its 25th Anniversary 911 Memorial Stair Climb, beginning with a formal remembrance ceremony scheduled for 8 a.m. on Friday at 7015 Evans Town Center Boulevard in Evans.

Following the opening ceremony, participating firefighters and first responders will tackle a rigorous 55-flight stair climb. The effort serves as a direct symbolic tribute to the 110 flights of stairs that once comprised the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. The public is invited to attend and actively take part in the climbing tribute alongside local emergency personnel free of charge.

Across the Savannah River in South Carolina, the Aiken County Firefighters’ Association is coordinating a community-wide gathering designed to bring families, veterans, and residents together in reflection. The organization is hosting its 9/11 Memorial Walk from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Beverly D. Clyburn Generations Park, situated at 700 Mack Henry Holland Drive in Aiken.

The park gathering combines solemn remembrance with community fellowship. Attendees will participate in a dedicated firefighter walk alongside local crews, while the broader event grounds will feature an assortment of local food trucks, live musical entertainment, and a specialized children’s activity zone. Organizers have directed the public to the association’s social media channels for additional scheduling details.

The emotional aftermath of the 2001 attacks is also being explored through the performing arts this weekend. The Aiken Community Theatre, located at 126 Newberry Street SW in downtown Aiken, is staging productions of the critically acclaimed musical "Come From Away" with curtain times set for 7:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday evenings.

The production tells the true story of approximately 7,000 international airline passengers who found themselves abruptly grounded in the remote town of Gander, Newfoundland, after United States airspace was shut down immediately following the terrorist hijackings. The musical captures the extraordinary hospitality, compassion, and unity demonstrated by the small Canadian community during a global crisis. Organizers reported that Friday's opening performance had sold out, with limited seating remaining available for the Saturday performance via the theater's digital ticketing box office.

In Columbia County's city of Harlem, fellowship and remembrance will take center stage at the local veterans' hall. Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 6445 is hosting a community Steak Night dinner on Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at its facility located at 330 East Milledgeville Road.

Individual meal tickets for the VFW event are priced at $20 each, with sales opening on-site beginning at 4 p.m. Organizers noted that walk-in guests are welcome to participate in the evening gathering, though overall meal availability remains dependent on limited meat supplies.

Youth athletics in Graniteville, South Carolina, will also serve as a venue for honoring emergency personnel and military service members. Midland Valley High School, located at 227 Mustang Drive, is dedicating its Friday night varsity football game to local first responders and armed forces veterans.

The high school’s tribute will span both pre-game ceremonies and halftime activities around the 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Organizers plan to distribute 100 commemorative hats to visiting veterans and emergency responders attending the game. Furthermore, the Graniteville Fire Department is deploying its heavy ladder truck to hoist and display the American flag over the field as the Mustang football team makes its traditional entrance down the hill into the stadium.

Adding a personal touch to the athletic observance, local law enforcement officers and military veterans will directly participate in preparing the team for competition by placing United States flag emblems onto the back of each Midland Valley player's helmet prior to kickoff.

On the military side, service members stationed at Fort Gordon will conduct a formal, private installation observance on Friday morning. The base remembrance ceremony is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. at Freedom Park and is restricted strictly to Department of Defense identification card holders.

The military ceremony will feature the firing of traditional cannon volleys timed specifically to coincide with each airplane impact that occurred during the 2001 attacks. The solemn artillery salutes underscore the enduring defense commitment of the installation and honor the sacrifices made by service members throughout the twenty-five years since that historic day.
