A wanted fugitive from Alabama is in custody in northern Florida after automated surveillance technology alerted law enforcement to his presence on a major interstate corridor. Deputies with the Columbia County Sheriff's Office intercepted 57-year-old Juan Montero along Interstate 75 on Friday evening, bringing an interstate manhunt to a safe conclusion following an automated license plate reader detection.

The operation originated after law enforcement authorities in Alabama issued an alert regarding Montero, who was actively sought on several serious charges. Officials in Baldwin County, Alabama, had issued a warrant for his arrest encompassing allegations of first-degree burglary, menacing, and harassment. The active warrant prompted interstate coordination to locate the suspect before any further incidents occurred.

The sequence of events unfolded rapidly on Friday when a regional law enforcement broadcast was transmitted at approximately 7:33 p.m. The bulletin warned regional agencies to be on the lookout for an armed and dangerous individual traveling in a white 2015 Toyota Highlander. With the suspect believed to be traveling across state lines, Florida agencies were placed on high alert along primary travel routes.

The critical breakthrough in the investigation came just over an hour later, at approximately 8:52 p.m. A FLOCK automated license plate reader system positioned near the major junction of Interstate 75 and Interstate 10 recorded the suspect’s white SUV as it traveled southbound through Columbia County. The system instantaneously processed the tag and flagged the vehicle in connection with the active regional alert.

Upon receiving the automated notification, deputies from the Columbia County Sheriff's Office moved strategically into position along the southbound lanes of Interstate 75. Utilizing the real-time data provided by the electronic monitoring network, units coordinated their approach to intercept the moving vehicle while managing traffic risks on the high-speed roadway.

At approximately 9:03 p.m., just eleven minutes after the initial automated camera detection, deputies sighted the white Highlander and executed a targeted traffic stop. The patrol units brought the vehicle to a halt along the interstate shoulder without triggering a pursuit or creating disruptions for other motorists.

Montero was taken into custody by responding deputies without further incident. Law enforcement officials confirmed that two juvenile children were also traveling as passengers inside the SUV at the time of the stop. Authorities immediately conducted welfare checks on both minors, determining that they were uninjured and in safe condition following the encounter.

A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded evidence that reinforced earlier warnings regarding the suspect's potential danger. Inside the center console of the Highlander, deputies discovered a loaded 9mm handgun that had a live round already chambered. Additional loose ammunition was also recovered alongside the firearm, prompting deputies to seize all weapons and related items as evidence.

Following the roadside arrest, Columbia County deputies made direct contact with the Elberta Police Department in Baldwin County, Alabama, to formally verify the validity of the outstanding arrest warrant. Once confirmation was received from Alabama authorities, Montero was transported to the Columbia County Detention Facility for formal intake.

Montero remains incarcerated at the county detention facility, where he is being held on the Alabama charges as jurisdictional procedures move forward. The recovery of the loaded weapon and the safe removal of the two children from the vehicle highlighted the high-stakes nature of the interstate operation.

The apprehension underscores the expanding role that automated license plate recognition technology plays in modern policing, particularly in intercepting wanted suspects moving between state boundaries. Law enforcement agencies have increasingly relied on automated camera networks like FLOCK to monitor high-volume highway arteries and cross-reference passing traffic with active national and state criminal databases.

The successful roadside stop also arrived during a notable regulatory transition regarding surveillance systems within Florida. Just weeks prior to the arrest, the Florida Department of Transportation issued an administrative memorandum on August 31 revoking permits for automated license plate readers—including FLOCK systems—installed along state-managed highway rights-of-way.

State transportation officials established a 30-day compliance timeline for law enforcement departments across Florida to adapt to the permit revocations and adjust their operational frameworks. Because Friday's interception occurred within that designated 30-day window, the Columbia County Sheriff's Office was operating fully within the authorized timeframe when utilizing the interchange camera.

The incident is likely to serve as a practical case study in ongoing policy debates concerning the operational utility of roadside license plate scanners versus evolving state regulatory guidelines. While state transportation officials have moved to restrict camera permits on highway corridors, local law enforcement leaders frequently point to real-time apprehensions of armed fugitives as clear evidence of the technology's effectiveness in protecting public safety.
